Program of Growth
Eagle Pines Academy believes that its nurturing, structured, program will help your son become a more productive and loving member of your family. Our program helps your son become more responsible and mature, more likely to acknowledge and make restitution for mistakes, more enthusiastic about academic achievement, and more likely to take responsibility for the quality of life in his environment.
The Eagle Pines program embodies four core components:
- Academics
- Social group life
- Outdoor recreation
- Family involvement
Each fundamental component takes into account current research on learning differences in pre-and early-adolescent boys, their brain functioning and development. Most of what a student needs to learn can be described as "skills." With you, we develop an individualized plan for each student that guides the teachers/counselors as to which skills need to be targeted, in what order and in a holistic manner.
Academics at Eagle Pines
Year-round, classroom instruction for grades four through eight uses the nationally recognized Ten Sigma Curriculum, with associated scoring guidelines for evaluating work and giving feedback. Ten Sigma is used by many private schools and is well respected. Your son’Äôs academic program is completely tailored to his needs and includes credit recovery and credits transferable to other academic settings. Eighth grade students will be able to function in either a public high school or a private educational setting when they graduate from Eagle Pines.
The ratio of teaching adults to students is always at least one adult to eight students in the classroom.
Social Group Work Model
Using this model, your son will learn to thrive in a small social group, mentored by adults who infuse the system with the simple values of integrity, honor, trust, personal responsibility, spiritual awareness, and hard work. The small social group has a great deal of autonomy in making decisions that affect the quality of life in its living group and in the larger community. That autonomy empowers students to create and learn from their choices.
Recreation
Recreational activities are educational, rich, emotionally challenging, and fun. Our location in a 130-acre forest allows us to use the outdoors as a natural classroom. On campus, the group's activities might include a planned hike in the woods to study ecosystems, gardening, or an on-campus ropes course. Off campus trips may include canoeing, fishing or visits to cultural and arts venues.
Family Involvement
Eagle Pines recognizes and supports the need for families to fully participate in the student's plan. Intensive family focus and family coaching is used by our staff to restore family relationships and to transition your son back into family life. Families have both planned and informal means for regular dialogue about your son’Äôs progress. Each family is urged to attend family workshops at Eagle Pines. You also have both internet and telephone access to continuously updated information. We deliver monthly updates to you.
Length of Program
We assess each student's educational and emotional needs individually. Generally, families should expect that significant changes will require a commitment to the program of 12 to 18 months. Staff and parents and their consultants may participate in the team which generates an individualized plan for the student, with goals appropriate to his specific educational and emotional needs.
After the Program
Following a student's graduation from the program, Eagle Pines can tailor an individual support plan for your son and your family. The plan may include telephone support, visitation from campus staff in the your home, visits to the campus by your son, or readmission for short periods. There is online support for families, both from campus staff and from other families. We also conduct an exit interview to provide information for the school to continuously improve services to students and families.
